Guess who is coming to Quail Ridge Book Store!

Friday, October 16, 7 pm – BRIAN SELZNICK
The award-winning author & illustrator (Caldecott Medal recipient for The Invention of Hugo Cabret) visits us for the first time with the luminous The Marvels.  As in Wonderstruck, two story lines are connected – but how?  Massively illustrated, The Marvels is a story of family, the past, and puzzles, stretching over centuries.  Brian's multimedia program is not to be missed.  This event will be held at the nearby Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh (3313 Wade Ave.). Doors open at 6 pm.  Ticketed event: with purchase from us of The Marvels, receive up to two admission/signing line tickets. At time of book purchase, you may purchase a third companion ticket for $5.   Ages 9+.

Happy Friday! Here are a few updates from us to you! Enjoy your weekend! G4/T2

SCHOLAR’S CORNER -  A few reminders to help us to get into the full swing of things! In your Word Work homework you need to make sure that you are showing that you understand the meaning of the word in your story.  Also, you need to have an adult COPS your sloppy copy and then  begin writing your final draft.  When completing your UNRAAVEL homework you want to make sure(like the example we completed together) that you are going back and underlining where the answer was found AND labeling in the text what question that answers.
When you look at the Schoolwork   box on your BUZZ, remember that is the work that you completed in class the previous week.  You have until Wednesday of the current   to complete it! Most importantly ALWAYS ask questions to help you understand, we know that this takes time and as long as we have your great attitudes, we will accomplish it! Please write on the back of your BUZZ how your North Carolina project is coming along, what stage are you in?  We are proud of you! Ms. K and Mr. Jones
PARENT’S CORNER – We would love for you to follow us on our Grade 4/Track 2 blog.  There you will find helpful information that we try to update on a weekly basis.  You can find our blog by going onto the Brassfield site, clicking 4th grade, and then either Kessler or Jones tab.  Either will bring you to the same blog.  Also, our Twitter handle is on the blog so you can see the discoveries as they happen.
We have a meeting with our room parents on Monday, July 27th.  Our room parents this year are 1. Laurie Hinnant  2.  Natalie Conrad and 3.  Karen Cox.  We hope to keep you informed by sending home a weekly buzz with a parent’s corner, the blog, and also a Shutterfly site that the room parents will run.  We will do our very best to keep you in the “know” if you have another suggestion please do not hesitate to share your ideas.  This trackout, Mr. Jones will be tracking out of his room so all materials will go home on August 14th.  We are hoping to have a learning experience on the rise so be on the lookout for more information in the next week.

An exciting opportunity!

                                              Librarian Assistants Needed!
                                                       Apply Within

Third, Fourth, and Fifth grade students are invited to participate in the Junior Librarians program.  Junior Librarians are leaders in our school by assisting teachers and students when they come to the Learning Commons. They help keep our Learning Commons neat, organized, and in working order.  Students will serve on a rotating basis and will report from 8:45 a.m.-9:10 a.m. on the day(s) they are scheduled to work.

Students wishing to participate in Junior Librarians should complete an application and return it to Ms. Harkey no later than Wednesday, July 22.  Students must have a teacher signature and parent/guardian signature before the application is submitted.   New applications will be accepted in December/January for the second half of the year.

Students may come by my office to pick up applications!

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Scholars Corner – Welcome to the second week of school.  We understand that it will take a couple weeks training before we are all aware of the routines/expectations.  All that we asked of you is that you come in with a willing attitude to learn and conquer your day as we will do the same!
Remember – YOU HAVE TO HAVE YOUR 2 word work words by TUESDAY. You can complete all of the homework this weekend if you would like BUT it is due on Friday with no exceptions.  Each morning when you come into the room you can lay out your Buzz and any work that you have questions on or completed work so we can mark that off of your Buzz.
It is your responsibility to read, understand, and communicate the Buzz with your families.  We will work this year on becoming more independent scholars! On the back of the Buzz you are to write what was your favorite thing of the first week of 4th grade and write any questions on the back that may be concerning you!

PARENTS CORNER – Thank you for sending in school supplies for our classroom. Yes, we will allow yoga balls in the classroom for them to use for their “chair”.  If the yoga ball is used as a toy and not a tool you will see it return home;).
Thank you for your kind emails and understanding of me missing school the first week, I am sorry and appreciate your support.

Please don’t hesitate to email us or make an appointment to stop in with any questions or concerns.
