Scholars -    Remember “Think like a Middle Scholar”.  We really need you to think independently about what is due and when! Those of you still getting many reminders, we want you to challenge yourself to get HALF of those reminders and DOUBLE your success! You can do it! Help each other to stay on task.  We know that it is enjoyable to talk to your friends and we love that you have so many friendships BUT we are here to do a job so do it well!!  In the morning, you should 1. Read the SMART Board FIRST because that is where you are going to find what is expected with you during that time.  We have begun morning word problems and it is up to you to have the copied down and solved! This is what we are adding in so we can continue to work on the math objectives you struggled with as a class while moving forward with other objectives.  Write on the back of the sheet how you feel now about 5.NBT. 7.  Do you feel as though you know it consistently or inconsistently?  If it is inconsistently please add how WE can better help you so we can “fill that gap”.

Parents – Math Curriculum Night is this week on January 28th with Mrs. P.F.  Please visit the Brassfield website and take the survey monkey if you are going to attend.  There is also free child care available.  If you have any questions please let us know. It is that time of the year for sickness, if you have any extra boxes of Kleenexes or Clorox wipes for the classroom, we would appreciate the donation as we are getting quite low.  THANK YOU for ALL of your contributions, they never go unnoticed or unused;).  We are beginning fractions on Monday and we will be working with them for weeks as it is approximately 50% of our End of Grade Test this year. We will send in our order for G5/T2 t-shirts by trackout on February 13th.  We have had several families offer to buy a scholar a t-shirt and that has REALLY made some scholars day! They are very appreciative of that so thank you!  If you have any concerns or questions don’t ever hesitate to contact us and as always, thank you for your support! Stacy and Laura

Happy Martin Luther King's Day G5/T2

Scholars -    Thank you for all of your flexibility in our 2 hour delay days! I know it has been a difficult week because we were not able to get outside and enjoy some fresh air! You did a wonderful job though! Remember….think like a middle school scholar.  This is our time to train our brain! When you have a few minutes think about what you can accomplish during that time, what do I owe, what can I accomplish, what can I be doing to be successful! We have completed 5.OA.3, analyzing patterns and relationships.  We encourage you to play the different math games on our blog at home.  We have noticed that you are not using PISA while solving your math word problems, the problem with that often times is that you are using correct computation BUT you are not answering WHAT the problem is asking so therefore the answer is incorrect. It’s the middle of January, how is your New Year’s Resolution that you created a couple weeks ago coming along.  Write your update on the back of the Buzz now.

Parents – Please return report card envelopes as soon as you can and let us know if you would like us to schedule a conference.  Our math coach will be hosting a Math Curriculum night from 6-7pm on January 28th here at Brassfield.  It should be quite informative. The Kid Gov, with the help of Ms. Missy Abi-Najm have found somebody to make our very own G5/T2 t-shirts for $7.00 a piece.  We would love to see each scholar get one, if you didn’t receive the order form let us know and we will get another home to you.  We have been getting many complaints from the cafeteria about table manners and playing.  Please talk to your scholar about using the manners that we know that you have taught them.

Here is what is going on since the beginning of 2015!

Scholars -    Thank you for having a great week back in.  It was really wonderful to see all of you! Remember, out motto these next 2 quarters is to think like a middle school student! What does that mean? How are YOU organizing your thoughts, assignments that you need to have completed, odd and ends of responsibilities at school.  We really want YOU to take advantage of these next 2 quarters to get a system in place so when you go next year, you will have already “trained” your brain for this! We just want you to be very successful next year in the transition….So, write on the back what you know you need help with before going to middle school and how we can support you!

Parents – We have had a wonderful week back to school.  The kids seem to jump in and get back to routine quickly.  We have a new music teacher and technology teacher.  The kids met Mrs. Howly this week(tech teacher) and hope to meet the music teacher next.  The applications are out for the Math and Science Extravaganza.  The Extravaganza will be on Thursday February 12th.

Scholars -    From Kid Gov – If you would like to participate in “Frosty Friends” you are invited to.  What is Frosty Friends you ask….you will receive a name of another person who is interested in playing this game but shhhh don’t tell, it’s a secret until the 19th.  You CAN NOT buy your FF friend a gift, you are to write them a nice note or find a great quote that will make them smile each day next week.  If you are interested Kid Gov has will have a table set up today(12th) in Ms. Kessler’s room.   You will turn your name in and by the end of the day you will draw who your Frosty Friend is.
Scholars you will notice that your homework has been cut short this week.  We have decided to do that because we want you to use your time in the morning and waiting for the bus to brush up on your Math Skill and Motion and Design objectives so you can shine on the Case 21 tests next week.  Use your notebook and other scholars to help you fill out your Study Guide.  Ask another scholar or an adult to help you study the concepts.  The examples that are real life to you will help you to understand some of the new concepts you have learned this quarter.  If you are interested in participating in the Frosty Friends game please write “I am interested” on the back of your buzz and if you are not we are just curious to why, so please tell us why you are not interested on the back of your buzz now.  We hope that all of you have a wonderful Holiday break and as always we are very proud of you and look forward to returning in January to have a wonderful second half of 5th grade!
Parents – We will take our Quarter 2 Case21 in Reading, Math, and Science Monday – Wednesday.  Please help your child review addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of decimals in math.  Also, quiz them on the study guide in science.  We feel as though this study guide will really help them do a fantastic job on the test.  We will continue to have Science on Monday and Tuesday afternoon.  Thank you to Margaret, Laurie, Becky, Julie, and Kelly Zellman for offering to volunteer for our Bowling get together on Sunday.  Also, thank you to Margaret, Chris Z., and Ms. Missy for chaperoning our field trip to the Marbles Museum.
Your child will go home with their report card on the 19th.  Of course if you feel as though there are any errors don’t hesitate to contact either of us.  We have been known to make a few.  We hope you all have a wonderful Holiday break and look forward to seeing each of you in January for our second half of 5th grade! It is hard to believe!

Those of you that are able to join our Learning Experience on Friday, December 19th at 9:30am, we look forward to seeing you.! Thank you for all that you do to support our learning environment .__________________Scholars Initials that you have read the BUZZ

Way to go!  We have a very busy 2 weeks ahead of us BUT we have to stay focused when it’s work time.  We have so many objectives to learn and master before we leave on the 19th! For those of you who did not turn in your Let’s Plan a Party Project, you will have until December 17th to complete it.  We will allow this project to be late but we will be conferencing on how we can improve your independence and time management! We will be working on Science every afternoon this week and next so we still have lots to learn!  You will notice that we no longer have a website as we are slowly transferring everything to our new blog.  All assignments will be posted there from this day forward.  You can access the blog the same way you use to access our website for now. Write a sentence of your favorite part of your break on the back of your buzz…now;) We really missed you! Ms.Graf and Ms. K-

Parents – We really hope that you all had a wonderful break and enjoyed November.  We have a field trip on Friday to Marbles. We will be leaving around 9:45 and returning approx. 1:15.  If you need to get a hold of us for any reason, please just contact the office and they will get in touch.  We can have 2 chaperones from each class so please let us know if you are interested.  I know Margaret Nobles sent out a lengthy email with updates, if you did not receive them please send us an email so we can add you to the list.  Your child has a hard copy of a Bowling Event on December 13th, please have all forms returned by the 12th at the latest as we need to let the bowling alley know a number!
